Praise for the Orion Saga
"Nonstop action and mind-bending concepts combine to make Orion absolutely unforgettable. . . . Bova brings it to life on a canvas spread over time and space."
—Isaac Asimov
"Slambang SF adventure mingles with speculative theology in this gripping story of an immortal's hatred, a mortal's love, and a death-struggle that spans a million years."
—Spider Robinson on Orion
"Six-time Hugo Award winner Bova doesn't disappoint!"
—Los Angeles Daily News on Orion in the Dying Time
"Bova's adroit use of detail makes the setting ring true; his depictions of historical personages as well as his fictional creations are psychologically sound. The sounds, the scents, and the sensibility of the ancient world permeate this well-wrought adventure."
—Publishers Weekly on Orion and the Conqueror
"Bova creates characters that come alive on the page. . . . It is perfectly paced so that the reader has trouble putting the book down."
—The Clarion-Ledger on Orion in the Dying Time
"Bova presents enough solid historical backing to give the story a ring of authenticity."
—Starlog on Orion and the Conqueror
"Rip-roaring science fiction . . . tightly-constructed and fast-moving."

"One of the best SF military series around."

More than human, less than a god, John O'Ryan is Orion, made by the mysterious Creators who rule outside of time-created to do battle for them, and to die for them, up and down the timeline from the primal past to the unimaginable future.
But now Orion has become a key piece in a cosmic game between two of the Creators-Anya, the goddess he loves, and Aten, the god who toys with his destiny. Hurled by Aten far into the future, Orion finds himself commander of a human regiment consigned to perish in a vast interstellar war. But his passion for his beloved, and his raw determination to survive, snatches victory from the jaws of certain defeat.
Orion Among the Stars is the first Orion novel set entirely in the future. Orion leads a band of cloned soldiers in a galactic civil war that pits Creator against Creator. In this novel Orion is again out of place, but this time he does not have the advantage of his understanding of the future to help him in his battles. The story's action is just as strong as the previous 4 Orion books, but Bova introduces some unique new ideas in this book, such as cloned soldiers who are frozen between battles and do not have the rights one would expect human beings to have. In one interesting sequence Orion is arguing with an old time Army officer that the soldiers deserve a batter life, while the officer cannot get over the idea that they were cloned to be warriors and they are somewhat less than human. Obviously, this parallels Orion's own existence. Bova also introduces the idea that there are other species in the galaxy with more power than even the Creators, and those advanced species do not want to get involved in the petty disputes of the less advanced species. This acts as a reminder that the Creators themselves are descended from humans, because their strongest desire is for war and domination. Sadly, this is the last Orion novel and while Bova ended it on the same note of continuation, it does not look like Orion will be resurrected anytime soon.
Orion Among the Stars (1995) is the fifth SF novel in the Orion series, following Orion and the Conqueror. The initial work in this series is Orion.
In the previous volume, Orion and Anya wanted to return to the forest. Aten said that the continuum crisis need their attention. Anya agreed with Aten, so Orion did too. Paradise would have to wait.
Orion awoke among a mercenary band hired by Athenians to relieve the siege of Perinthos. Although he only remembered his name, Orion did know his duties as a hoplite in the mercenary phalanx. The besiegers sent another, larger phalanx against them.
The other phalanx scattered his own formation and killed off most of the mercenaries. Orion successfully defended himself from the enemy troops, but archers surrounded him. Then a black bearded, one-eyed man stopped the troop around him and offered him a position in the other army.
Of course, Orion had little choice and accepted the offer. He became just another hoplite in the Macedonian army. He learned about Philip and his wife the witch. He also discovered that the golden hair boy leading a cavalry troop was Philip's son.
Later Orion saved Philip from an assassinating attempt and was put into his personal guard. He met Olympias and recognizes that she was a Creator. Then Olympias called him in the night and shows him that he was helpless before her.
In this novel, Orion is a construct of the Creators. He has been given faster reflexes and faster thinking. And he remembers past lives.
Aten is the Golden One, a Creator from the far future with the ability to travel through time and other powers. His human avatar has golden hair.
Anya is a female Creator. Among the Greeks, she is known as the goddess Athena.
In this story, Orion found himself in the center of a whirlpool in space. Gradually his senses failed and he is left in a very cold and dark void. Somewhere Anya is struggling against great forces.
Then Aten appears before him in a utterly barren plain. He tells Orion that the Creators are facing a severe crisis in the continuum. Orion asks about Anya and the Golden One says she is far away.
Then Orion becomes aware that he is confined is a plain gray enclosure. The walls are warm, but he is chilled. Then the top lifts and he sits up in the cryonic sleep capsule.
He sees other capsules within the chamber. More lids are lifting and both men and women are sitting up. All are completely naked.
A lizard man asks who is the commander. Orion first believes that he is one of Set's minions, but the creature is somewhat different. Then he realizes that the commander of these men and women is himself.
Orion is called to the bridge. There Aten appears and inserts memories within his mind. Orion sees the expansion of mankind through space. They meet other sapient beings, including these Tsihn.
Orion learns that Anya and other Creators are opposing Aten. The alien species are fighting on both sides on this war between the Creators. Now Orion is charged with invading the nearby planet and taking it from Aten's enemies.
The soldiers in this war are clones, who are frozen in cryonic vessels between mission. They are sterile, but are allowed sexual relations to keep their aggressiveness high. Orion is mated with Frede.
The soldiers are loaded on an assault shuttle and landed on the planet. They carry a transceiver station, which must be assembled on the surface. It will receive supplies and equipment for the invasion. Since transceivers destructively scan objects and reconstruct them in the receiver, other soldiers will be shuttled to the surface.
Unfortunately, Orion and his company drop within a swamp. Intelligence has stated that nothing larger that a lemur is native to the planet. Yet the swamp is full of tentacled monsters that can bite through their armor.
After they escape from the swamp onto higher land, they start to reassemble the transceiver. They are facing a feline race on the planet. The Skorpis have a base on the other side to the world, but would soon learn where they are located.
This tale puts Orion into a desperate battle with the Skorpis. The Tsihn ships are surprised by a larger enemy fleet and withdraw from the system. Orion's company are stranded on the planet.
Orion works to save his troops. The next installment in this sequence is Orion and King Arthur.
Highly recommended for Bova fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, military comradery, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

I've always enjoyed reading Bova's Orion series. Each one brings the main character towards the conclusion that war is useless. It is a very clever plot line that links the Trojan war to interstellar wars with alien races.
A decent read, but the pacing was off for me. I'm a huge fan of the series.
Orson Scott Card!!
I love reading this book and
I've read several Ben Bova books, but none about the adventures of Orion. This was the first and I wish I read them in order to understand the background, but Ben does a good job of providing you with some levels of background ... enough to understand what and why things are happening.
The story was believable and interesting to the point that I had trouble putting the book down. Yes, story takes place in a far-far universe, but makes many references to earth and other solar systems. I believed in the plot and the characters.
I enjoyed the character development and the why's of what was happening. I'd refer this book to any syfy enthusiast. Good story, good characters and ending leaves you want to read the next adventure.
